the track / axiom / page #28From 2014 to 2019
As the
second decade of the 20th Century ended, several powerful dynasties in Europe had taken
comprehensive defeats. The Romanovs had to elude a revolution. The Ottomans were forced to
withdraw from the Balkans. Habsburgs and Hohenzollern had ruined their empires themselves.
"World War I" was then not so called but "The Great War". In its
scale, its completely new technical level and its brutal consequences it was
traumatizing for the whole continent.
In Austria, a brief sentence is as significant as misleading for the start of the
disaster: "The shots of Sarajevo".
The assassination of the Austrian Archduke and his wife by Gavro Princip was the pretext,
which Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf, chief of staff, had been hoping for some time to start
a preventive war against Serbia.
After the Berlin Congress the Habsburgs had a clear ambition to make the Balkans a colony
of Austria.
From these events near the Latin
Bridge (latinska cuprija) in Sarajevo the Austria whose Austrian I am is a contradictory
Legend. There is a need for clarification.
After Verdun, Auschwitz and Srebrenica I would assume that this Europe is serious to
rearrange ideologically and organizationally.
I would assume that this Europe is serious about breaking with its racist traditions,
strive for distributive justice and defend the assessment of human rights in any case.
If so, we will need to check on us, as much we have emancipated from the dominant images
and concepts of the period around 1914.
To do that, we should at least be familiar with the immediate flow of history. We would
certainly benefit to communicate with those whose grandparents were on the other side.
That is what happened in this particular part of the range of "the track: axiom"
in the emphasis of the timeslot "from 2014 to 2019."
This section has a multi-year history as part of our projects. Now we have begun to make
the necessary preparations for the next steps in 2013. See also: Die Tage der
