ART LINE DO NOT CROSS
Opening: Thursday, march 18, 2004, 6:30pm
Thursday march 18 at 6:30pm 404 arte contemporanea presents Angelo Ricciardis solo
exhibition ART LINE DO NOT CROSS in the new exposition space of via Santa Brigida in
Napoli, Italy.
The show documents this namesake project and its contiguous events produced during 2003 in
the cities of Napoli, Berlin, New York, Milan, London, Venice, Bologna, Jakobstad,
Pforzheim, Millwaukee, Perugia, Novi Ligure, Gleisdorf, Cesena, Weerde, Torino, and
Chappaqua. The yellow strip ART LINE DO NOT CROSS is
derived by substituting ART for the word POLICE in the plastic warning strip POLICE LINE
DO NOT CROSS which has been made familiar by decades of use in American fiction
cinematography for delineating the off limits crime scene. It is reproduced here by Angelo
Ricciardi in ways analogous to the original while not just inviting reflection but more so
in requests for intervention in order to open up a discourse on limits, barriers, sites
and confines of art in the contemporary world.
In the exhibition, alongside the installation of the rolls of ART LINE strips one finds
the participation in this project of an impossible Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, Hugo
Ball and Richard Hamilton who return to their roles and responsibilities in the historic
Avantgarde.
This project has been realized thanks to the collaboration
of Alisa, Coco Gordon , Antonio Picardi, Jonathan Monk, Emilio Fantin, Nello Teodori,
Marzia Migliora, Robin Kahn, Robert C. Morgan, Giancarlo Norese, Luc Fierens, Anton Roca,
Nicola Renzi, Gabriele Di Matteo, Eva Forsman, Rita Degli Esposti, Steffen Mueller, Martin
Krusche, Vito Pace, Mary Jo Walters, Toni Knox.
Texts by Francesca Comisso (a.titolo), Vinni Lucherini,
Vincenzo Cuomo are published in the catalog.
In the American telefilms a narrow yellowstrip inscribed, POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS in
red separates the scene of a crime from everything surrounding it. A boundary is formed,
which can be crossed only by those working in that partitioned space. A separation is
quantified. The fracture is institutionalized.
Paradoxically can the interruption (of the circuit)
meanwhile restore contact in the Beep of such a moment that appears/disappears?
